A Success MAP for Your Smart Struggling Child

- Mindset — every child is different, but it is often the parents who make the difference. You want to start with a success mindset that starts with the belief that your child can and will be successful. Most of our students are visual learners, we do better with a hands-on approac
- Assessing for Success — one psychologist described his problem – most parents wanted him to find out what is wrong with their child. We flip the discussion and focus on assessing for success. Most of our students have a combination of strengths and challenges. They often
- Learn best when they see and experience information
- Have some combination of attention, visual processing, anxiety and related challenges
- Can do far better when they are taught to their strengths, their challenges are identified and addressed, and their parents learn how to be the coach and advocate their child needed
- A Process that is tailored, integrated, engaging and effective. Every child is different so:
- Tailoring the effort to meet your child’s unique needs is really helpful. For the visual learner — a hands-on program can be much more effective
- Integrated programs can address multiple issues and allows the child to benefit from consistent approaches. Too often we see a child go from one program to the other — with the focus on one or two skills. Our approach is to teach to the child’s strengths, identify and address their challenges, where possible, and to refer to other professionals where needed
- Engaging — many programs are boring and work on skills that are not engaging. We believe engaging a child is critical
- Effective — we believe the key is to set external goals that the student works for. There can be goals that are part of a program, but the critical goals to set and achieve are the external goals
After we assess for success, we lay out your key concerns, determine where your child is at, set specific goals with you and discuss how we can achieve them.
The mom said, I think my child is a visual learner with attention challenges, but I am not sure and I have no idea if my son has visual processing challenges. How do I check to see whether my child is a visual learner and whether he has attention, visual processing and/or related challenges? She added that she was not sure what her child’s present level of reading comprehension was.
