Does Your Smart Struggling Kid Have Comprehension, Attention and/or Anxiety Challenges?

This Mom with a Smart Struggling Kid is a Classic Case of Intervention Exhaustion and Frustration
Her smart struggling kid had been through 3 different reading programs and 2 different ADHD medications, without making great progress,
Now her smart struggling kid was in counseling for anxiety challenges.
We asked mom if the following issues were impacting her child:
- Was her child in remedial reading and wanted out?
Mom’s response was Yes and she hated it, and wanted to be able to take an elective
- Did her child skip words and lines when reading?
Again the answer was yes
- Were standardized tests a concern?
Mom said third grade retention was now a HUGE risk
- Did homework take far longer than it should?
In 3rd grade homework was supposed to take 30 to 45 minutes and it was now taking 1.5 to 2 hours
- Did her child get stressed when doing homework?
Mom commented that both her child and her got stressed and sometimes it felt like world war three
- Did her child get anxious before tests?
Yes was the answer, even before minor tests, and it got really bad before big tests
- Did her child remember events, even from years ago?
Mom was astounded — yes, she has this incredible visual memory, how do you know that

Why is my Smart Struggling Kid Not Making the Desired Progress?
That was mom’s question. We asked a few questions.
- Was the reading intervention either tailored to teach the way your child learns best or to improve comprehension? No was the answer. Mom commented that both programs worked on reading fluency, how well her child read out loud, but did precious little to address comprehension. She also commented that the program did not teach to her child’s strengths
- Was the program integrated to address comprehension, attention and anxiety challenges? Again the answer was no. Each educator, doctor and therapist worked on one skill and did not integrate the other issues
- Did the program engage your child? Again the answer was no — in fact her child disliked virtually all the interventions
- The last question would have been “Were the programs effective?’, but mom had already addressed that
