Preparing for Fourth Grade is more that          Beating Third Grade Retention

Third Grade Retention was what her daughter was facing.  Her daughter had failed the third grade reading FSA – Florida Standards Assessment.

The school has recommended summer school — their primary approach was to beat third grade retention was to provide a great deal of test prep.

The learning center she sent her daughter to stressed practice, practice and even more practice.

Mom said we had helped a friend of hers to beat third grade retention and to be well prepared for 4th grade.   She asked us how our approach was different from school and the learning center.

First, we recognize that Florida has provided multiple Good Cause Exemptions to beat third grade retention.    We also realize that meeting these exemptions will not  necessarily prepare a child for Success in Fourth Grade and beyond.

We asked her a few questions:

1-  What is your child’s reading comprehension level

She told us her daughter was reading at a Level K — mid-second grade level

2-  Does your child remember places visited, even from years ago?

Yes she said — she remembers stuff I have forgotten

3-  Does your child skip words and/or lines when reading?

Yes she does mom said

4-  Does your child lose focus and get anxious when taking tests?

5-  Is your goal to avoid third grade retention and/or to prepare your child to succeed in fourth grade?

Both she said — mom was worried that both summer school and the learning center were hyper focused on passing the end of summer test — that they were not focused on improving her child’s reading comprehension.

At 3D Learner, our approach to beat third grade retention is to prepare a child for success in 4th grade and beyond.  We focus on improving attention, eye-teaming, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, while reducing anxiety.  Our goal is to get a child back to grade level ASAP.

Mom said her husband would like to come in and do an assessment.   She asked was there an assessment or assessments that were cost effective.

We gave her three options

1-  We offer a no cost Success Assessment that screens for a learning difference and attention and visual processing challenges.  This should be done with her child and could be found at Success Assessment

2-  We do offer a Focus Assessment that assesses a child’s reading comprehension and whether her child has an attention and/or a visual processing challenge.  We offer more details at Focus Assessment

Beat Third Grade Retention

The Key to Beating Third Grade Retention is     to Assess the Critical Factors

Mom said she had a friend whose child was facing third grade retention — and wondered what would be the logical next steps.

We emphasized that when timing is critical, a call is the right next step — her friend should call us at 561-361-7495.

The good news is that we were able to help both students to both beat third grade retention and to be well prepared for success in 4th grade and beyond.
