Reframe it as an Opportunity and Put Your Child on His or Her Pathway from Stress to Outrageous Success

Sir Richard Branson, of Virgin fame, recently wrote an article titled “When I am faced with a problem, I reframe it as an opportunity” .   In his case he was talking about business opportunities. At 3D Learner we have been helping students for over 20 years look at what opportunities they have that can help them succeed in life.

For many students reading is a problem. What would happen if you looked at

Reading Speed and Comprehension Issues as an Opportunity not a problem?

At this time, your child may be faced with either a reading speed and/or comprehension challenge.

1.Your child may be struggling in school, but either:
a. Has not been identified with a learning problem or
b. Has been identified with a learning problem, but school and outside interventions have not made the difference

Reframe: What is my child good at, and how can I use those strengths to improve learning. Is it time to try something different?

2.Your child’s grades may be far better than his or her reading rate and comprehension:
We have had cases of 9th graders with grades that are good and their reading comprehension is 2, 4 and even 6 years below grade level. Sometimes these kids are very bright – with above average, superior or even gifted IQs – but their reading comprehension is well below their potential.b. The normal silent reading rate for students to be able to perform in school is 250 to 350 words per minutes. Under 200 words per minute can impact how long a homework assignment might take, as well as how kids perform on tests. This often leads to students not liking to read and giving up and not doing well.We have had middle school students whose reading rate was as low as 66 words per minute and high school students with a reading speed of 104 words per minute. This means that they are processing information slowly.

Reframe: How can we increase processing speed and reading speed?

c. For other students, the challenge is both reading speed and comprehension. Middle and high school programs rarely address either problem effectively and many smart students continue to struggle without anyone knowing this is a problem. They are able to get by and even achieve good grades, but at what cost! They spend hours studying while their friends seem to have a much easier time.

Reframe: Find and use tools to help your child increase reading speed and comprehension.

3D Learner was born the day a guidance counselor told us our daughter’s reading comprehension was 3 years below grade level and that she should pursue a vocational track in high school, so she could get a job when she graduated from high school.

We realized at that point we needed to reframe.

We first looked at what had not worked and this included:

            • Hundreds of hours of Dyslexia Training
            • Even more time reading with her

At that point, we realized the biggest opportunity was that she learned differently and if taught to her strengths, she could succeed. We saw many benefits by recognizing her visualization strengths, hands-on learning ability, and getting involved in opportunities that built her self-esteem. It was our shift in mindset that set the stage for her success in high school and college.
