The Visual Learner with Dyslexia Has Different Needs
NPR had an interesting article on “Raising a Child with Dyslexia, 3 Things Parents Can Do” From our perspective, for the Visual Learner with Dyslexia — the recommendations might be different.
The NPR article recommends:
- Intervening early
- Find something your child is good at
- Develop a financial plan — addressing dyslexia could cost tens of thousands of dollars and in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars — when a student with dyslexia is sent to a school that specializes in dyslexia
We did all of the above and it was expensive and frustrating.
Why The Visual Learner with Dyslexia Needs a Tailored, Integrated, Engaging and Effective Approach
A visual learner is a child who learns best when he or she sees and experiences information. We have found that over 80% of the students we have met with dyslexia are a visual learner with dyslexia.
Our 3 Recommendations for Your Visual Learner With Dyslexia
Five things have experience with students who are a visual learner with dyslexia:
- The student often struggles for years — despite a massive investment of time, money and effort
- These students often have a combination of visual processing, attention, auditory processing and/or related challenges
- The visual learner with dyslexia is often able to be far more successful in months not years —
- These students respond best to a tailored, integrated, engaging and effective approach that capitalizes on their visual skills, identifies and addresses their processing challenges, and addresses their dyslexia
- It is up to parents to make the difference for their child
We recommend you consider:
- AMindset change that you want to help your child succeed in months not years
- Assessing for success — in addition to assessing for dyslexia – you want to know if your child is a visual learner and what processing challenges are holding your child back
- Partnering with professionals who can tailor a program for your child that is tailored, integrated, engaging and effective
If you have not already done so — we offer a no cost Success Assessment that screens for whether your child is a visual learner and if your child might have an attention or visual processing challenge. We recommend you do this with your child — your child’s answers may provide valuable insights. You can access the assessment at Success Assessment
