Parenting the Gifted Visual Learner with Dyslexia Can Be Frustrating or Rewarding

The gifted visual learner with dyslexia seems like a contradiction in terms, but it is not.

The gifted visual learner with dyslexia has several things going on at the same time:

1- The student is gifted — this may mean they have a 130 IQ or for the gifted visual learner, it may mean the student has a real gift for learning best when he or she sees and experiences information

2- The visual learner learns best when he or she sees and experiences information

3-  Dyslexia means a problem relating the sounds and the symbols in words — for the gifted visual learner with dyslexia – it often means the student’s reading comprehension, spelling, writing and/or related skills are inconsistent with how smart they are

4-  Visual processing, attention, working memory and processing speed often impact the gifted visual learner with dyslexia

5-  Anxiety and low self-esteem often impact these students

The Gifted Visual Learner with Dyslexia often has two, three or four of these challenges

6-  Intervention exhaustion is quite common for the gifted visual learner with dyslexia – -students are often taken from one intervention to another — without the desired results.

7-  Most important of all, these students can often become very successful

These concepts are the same for the gifted visual learner or the visual learner with dyslexia.

Three Critical Steps for Parenting the Gifted Visual Learner with Dyslexia

1-  The mindset you adopt is critical.  We recommend three components

• Focus on helping your child to be all he or she can be
• Work with your child’s school to get all the help they can provide – although it is rarely enough
• Get help from professionals who focus on student’s like your child and follow through with a passion

2- Assessments can be quite misleading. Specifically:

• A school based assessment may be of limited value
• You want to screen first to see if your child is a visual learner — because this changes everything – and then screen for the attention, visual processing and related challlenges
