Second and Third Grade Retention Can Often Be Avoided by Informed, Empowered and Proactive Parents
Third Grade Retention is a policy used by Florida to avoid social promotion — promoting a child just because they have completed third grade. It is important to know that schools are now using grade retention proactively in 1st and 2nd grade.
The key point here is that the best thing a parent can do to beat grade retention is to improve your child’s reading comprehension.
What we know is that many at-risk students learn differently and have attention, eye-teaming and/or anxiety challenges.

Alternatives to Beat Grade Retention
Despite many flaws, Florida does offer several Good Cause Exemptions to give parents and option to beat third grade retention.
With parents now receiving reading benchmarks and initial warnings that their child might be at risk for third grade, it is important for parents to be aware of three things
1- Senate Bill 1008.25 allows parents to request a student portfolio be started if their child is at risk for third grade retention.
2- Many students with dyslexia and learning disabilities are not identified with a disability because of a flawed identification process. We know that Response to Intervention, a process theoretically designed to help students succeed, has been used to delay or deny evaluations. We have written a post to help parents to be Informed, Empowered and Proactive — and to provide specific tools to avoid The RTI Trap
