1- Too many programs assume a child can learn the way the programs are taught. Everyone seems to agree with the quote below, but not when it comes to reading:

2- The program has to be both engaging and effective. Too often high school students zone out when the program or the teacher are not engaging
3- A High School Reading Comprehension Program for the visual learner needs to focus on building vocabulary, building on prior experience, and teaching the student to visualize what he or she reads. This is an excellent article from the Atlantic on Why We Have a Reading Comprehension Problem. One interesting comment focused on the need to shift from comprehension skills,
“whether or not readers understand a text depends far more on how much background knowledge and vocabulary they have relating to the topic than on how much they’ve practiced comprehension skills. “
4- Attention working memory and visual processing issues need to be identified and addressed. Many students who need a high school reading comprehension program are visual learners with attention, visual processing and/or anxiety challenges
The Right Reading Comprehension Program Should Meet the Student’s Needs
5- Reading speed is often a significant issue. The combination of the focus on decoding and visual processing challenges often slows the student down
6- The program must address these students’ very busy schedule. High school students are busier than ever. Even struggling readers are taking advanced placement courses, they are often involved in extracurricular activities and they cherish their free time
7- They have to be committed to doing the work and see the value in improving their reading speed and reading comprehension
