Third grade retention is a real risk for a student with a significant reading deficiency. In Florida, there are Good Cause Exemptions to Third Grade Retention
The Opt-Out movement is a legitimate reaction to a test-centric focus on public education. The challenge is that all the Good Cause Exemptions are harder to achieve then getting a Level 2 on the English Language Assessment. The movement correctly says that a student without a reading deficiency can opt-out and probably still be promoted. What is not clear is that avoiding third grade retention is much harder if one relies on the Good Cause Exemptions.
We recommend parents whose child has been warned that their child is at risk for third grade retention or has a reading deficiency take a good look at the Good Cause Exemptions and the third grade retention risks.
When we have explained this situation to parents, they have chosen to:
- Have their child take the third grade English Language Assessment
- Get help for their child to improve their reading comprehension, to be promoted to 4th grade and to be avoid third grade retention.
Grade retention is seen as one of the top three stressors for elementary school students. The loss of a parent, going blind and grade retention were seen as the top three stressors in an article publiced in the Journal of Applied School Psychology.
