Holiday Tips for Children – Especially Visual Learners
Holiday tips for children – holiday trips for children with attention and anxiety challenges can be fun and/or really frustrating.
To help you to both enjoy the holidays and reduce the stress, we have put together the video below that focuses on:
- The pivotal role parents plays in reducing stress and anxiety – stay calm, when possible
- Holiday Tips for Children that are especially relevant during these times including
- Bringing along healthy food and either water or water bottles — you can fill in the airport to reduce the stress from over hungry and dehydrated children
- Creating a visual schedule so kids know what to expect
- Use an erasable pen when writing out the visual schedule and explain that plans may change
- Show your children pictures of people they will meet, their names, and an experience they may have shared. Then when you say hello to these people – use their names to give your children a hint of who they are
- Planning for the unexpected — bring games and discuss the fact that flight delays and road congestion occur at record rates during holiday season
- Having a family word that all of you agree on, that will signal someone is annoyed or tense, that can break that tension when another person does something annoying. We used the word “tuna fish” on our family trips when one of us got annoyed. Our response was to laugh, which signaled we all understood.
- Finding a quiet spot for calmly dealing with a frustrated child ;do a mental check to see if they might be hungry and/or dehydrated
- Have songs you can sing or games you can play in the car — when the traffic gets bad or the long trip just got longer
We are also posting this video to our 3D Learner facebook page and we encourage you to post your comments or suggestions — we know that many of you have holiday tips for children that will help others.
