Success MAP Could Include the Right Mindset, Assessment and Plan

Success MAP for a Child Who Struggles with Reading Comprehension
Lisa’s reading comprehension was well below grade level. Specifically, Lisa’s parents were frustrated with what had happened at a public school and at a very expensive Dyslexia Treatment. When Lisa”s parents did our online Success Assessment with Lisa the results showed that Lisa was a visual learner (i.e. she learned best when she saw and experienced information) and she appeared to have attention, eye-teaming and anxiety challenges.
The first thing that changed was Lisa’s parents
- Mindset. The school plan was not ambitious. Lisa’s parents mindset changed when we discussed the possibilities if Lisa was taught to her strengths and her challenges were addressed
- Assessing for Success is important – it may include a traditional assessment, but also looks at the following questions:
- How far below grade level is the child’s reading comprehension? In Lisa’s case her reading comprehension was 3.5 years below grade level – -this was further below grade level than her reading fluency — a measurement of how well a student reads out loud. Too often reading fluency is used to measure reading, when one must assess reading comprehension to understand how well a student understands what he or she reads. Reading speed is often critical to look at. We have seen middle schoolers reading 67 words per minute — which is too slow to sustain attention. Lisa was reading at 115 words per minute — well below grade level
- Is the child a visual learner, who learns best when he or she sees and experiences information? Lisa was
- Does the child lose focus in school, or when taking tests or doing homework? Lisa did
- Does the child skip words and/or lines when reading? A Visagraph (R) Test showed that Lisa skipped words and lines when reading. Lisa did
- Is there an anxiety issue? Lisa got really anxiety when we even discussed reading
- Are there other challenges (e.g. working memory, processing speed, auditory processing etc.)? Lisa had some challenges in each area
- A Success MAP should include:
- Goals for what is important — in Lisa’s case the goal was to improve reading comprehension by 3 grade levels and to improve reading speed by 50% over the next 6 months
- An action plan to achieve the goals — with our training and a concerted effort by Lisa and her parents Lisa:
- Improved her reading comprehension by 4 grade levels after 6 months
- Doubled her reading speed from 115 to 230 words per minute
- Another goal was to reduce homework time from 2.5 to 1.5 hours
- The plan included:
- Improving Lisa’s attention and eye-teaming
- Improving her reading speed and comprehension
- Working collaboratively with her teachers — without reducing the workload
- Having Lisa’s parents keep calm during homework sessions
- Using a visual schedule
- Lisa did reduce her homework time from 2.5 to 1.25 hours per night
