Third Grade Retention Risk – Parents, Focus on Reading Comprehension
If your child is at risk for third grade retention, reading comprehension and anxiety are likely to be two of the key issues. The key point is that parents can avoid third grade retention by having the right mindset, getting the right assessment and partnering with the right professionals.
For a Florida Parent, there are five major risks
1- Third grade retention in Florida is mandatory unless your child meets one of the Good Cause Exemptions. While a student portfolio may still be an option, passing the end of school year or end of summer test are the two best options for your child to be promoted to 4th grade
2- If your child barely gets promoted to 4th grade, he or she may still be well below grade level in reading comprehension
3- Fourth grade is much harder than third grade, because reading comprehension will impact all subjects and because writing skills become much more important in 4th grade
4- Some parents choose to avoid third grade retention by homeschooling or sending your child to private schools. These are both valid options, but they do not address the underlying reading comprehension and anxiety challenges
5- Most parents are not aware that their child is a visual learner or whether their child has an eye-teaming issue — both are very common challenges when a smart student is struggling
Since third grade retention laws were implemented in 2004, we have been helping third graders to master the skills for promotion and to be far better prepared for 4th grade.
We have helped many third graders to:
- Avoid third grade retention by improving their reading comprehension
- Be promoted and in the following year score well above grade level on reading tests
- Improve their reading comprehension by up to3 grade levels in 1 year — this young man’s private school teacher said, “I have never seen a student make such dramatic gains in one year”, Ms Morris.
