Should This Be a Vacation or Reading Time?
Reading time matters.
Parents have asked us a different version of this question.
“My child is so exhausted, I think I’m just going to let him relax and do nothing… What do you think?”
“My child is having her State test right after vacation, I think I will have her practice EVERY DAY!”
The REAL question should be:
“What can I do to help my child both get re-energized as well as stay on track for the rest of the school year?”
It is very true that by this time of year our kids are starting to run out of steam and they do need a break. Doing nothing or letting them binge-watch television is obviously not the answer. Trying to find a balance of activities and relaxation is hard. It is important that a routine be maintained. This is a relatively short break from school and then there is a big push to complete the curriculum for the rest of the year. Maintaining a relatively same bedtime is vital. Make this a week for kids to catch of on missed sleep!-So many studies are coming out now about the importance of sleep for children.

Get out those board games!- Playing a different game every night. You will be surprised at what can be discovered with regards to language, when you play games.
Make a VISUAL SCHEDULE of plans for the week.
Includes some kind of exercise every day!
YES YES YES include reading SOMETHING every DAY! Crafts– require reading directions!
Recipes require sequencing and measuring accurately!
Find puzzles or mazes to keep your kids occupied…try a 48 hour period WITH OUT ANY electronics— That goes for adults too!!!
Reading Time Matters and Do It Together
Try Reading an entire book– ALOUD and TOGETHER- over the vacation period.
Make this Vacation TIME a time to reconnect with your kids. With everything that is going on in this world–It’s time to have a great vacation where everyone is listened to and respected for who they are!!!!
