Right-brain Learners Are More Likely to Be Tense, Not Confident & Unfocused

Many students walk into a test tense, not confident and lose focus during the test. This leads to poor results and further anxiety. It could also lead to grade level retention, your child having to take remedial courses, or your child being at risk of not receiving a regular diploma.

Most of our students are right-brain learners who tend to be more emotional.  Given a stressful situation, right-brain learners often become tense, not confident and unfocused.

In our learning center, we provide ways to help students be calm, confident and focused.

What you say and how you say it are both critical.

Consider these two phrases:

”  Stay Calm  “

”  Don’t be anxious  ”

Since children may picture what they hear and they often drop the “don’t” – the two pictures are very different

For your child to be as calm as possible, we recommend the following steps:

1)   Show your child how to calm themselves down by learning to breath deeply and counting slowly to five. Do it with them.

2)   Make sure your child

– Gets a good night’s sleep for the entire week before the test

– Eats a healthy meal the night before the test and the day of the test

– Have your child bring a bottle of water to the test – hydration helps. Ask if the teacher will allow them to suck on a peppermint during the test.

3)   If your child has accommodations, (e.g. extra time, or a separate room) make sure the school is going to use them and your child is aware of what they are.

4)   If a teacher or someone else says something that is upsetting – remind your child that their goal should be to be to remain calm no matter what

5)   If you make a mistake and say something that stresses your child – apologize and rephrase to calm your child.

KEEP LANGUAGE POSITIVE, it’s always a great rule

I_Can-23D Learner primarily helps students who learn differently. They are right-brain learners who learn best when they see and experience information.  We use Biofeedback and a Personal Controller to help students calm themselves.  We use the Interactive Metronome® and Brain Gym® to help students improve their attention, self-control and resilience — their ability to rebound when stressed.

We also recognize that visualization and confidence are important for every child, but they are more important for the right-brain learner — whose academic performance does not always match their intelligence.

We work with students to build their confidence and their self-advocacy skills.

We also help parents to be the coach and advocate your child needs.  We have four children.  Two of whom were traditional learners and two of whom were right-brain learners.  We learned a great deal from our children and from 18 years of helping others.

If you have not done so yet, we encourage you to:
