It’s time to recognize and build on your child’s strength with strength-based training!
If your child has been struggling to get through this school year, both you and your child are counting the days until school is over! Try Strength-based training for your visual learner and you will see a difference!
It is heartbreaking for me to read post after post in Facebook about how our creative and smart kids are feeling so defeated. It feels like our schools are not helping as much as they should be. The truth is…THEY DON’T KNOW HOW! They don’t use strength-based training.
In our data driven world it’s easy to focus on what is wrong – the focus becomes repeated activities at what is difficult for a child to do. Think how frustrating that must be! If the activity is hard to do in the first place, and now you are asked to do it over and over again.
Over the past 20 years, as we have met and worked with thousands of students from around the world, I have observed the change that comes over kids when the adults around them create a positive energy. Thanking a sleepy 14-year-old for making the effort to show up at our office, when their parents want them to be here, and they don’t really want to be here. Tapping into the 8-year old’s excitement about a game they like, or a Kindergartener’s new toy! In short, “meeting the child where they are!”
We all have qualities that can be improved, but for a child who is struggling to read or write properly or understand math, their entire day is filled with ideas that they somehow just can’t ‘measure up’. Frustration and anxiety has become a way of life for them. They know they are different, but NOT in a good way.
Strength based training just makes sense to me. For years, I kept looking for reasons why my kids were having difficulties. I felt I really needed a label- to know what was WRONG!
I had tried a lot of programs. WE meet students every day who have spent YEARS working so hard at mastering every level of explicit programs, only to still hate reading. They want to quit! What a difference is when a child’s eyes light up when they are asked to use their visualization skills to help them read. This can be a different and difficult task for some students. A skill that comes naturally to these kids is often difficult for them to apply to reading. Reinforcing their abilities to be used in a different way has proven to help them become amazing readings – in a relatively short time frame!
Imagine Amanda’s excitement when after realizing she could create pictures of words she was seeing in a book, she was really reading the words (without the effort of sounding out ever part).Creating pictures for words, recognizing the SEQUENCE of letters for words and using her visualization skills to master how they worked together was almost too easy for her. Even though she was only 8 years old, she had come to believe that the reading process was a long and laborious one. Using colored sticks to help her form clay letters, creating those images in her mind, and creating meaning for the word, seemed effortless! Amanda’s mom observed in amazement – her daughter had never learned words so fast, as well as with such enthusiasm.
Make no mistake, it’s not magic. It still takes work. But kids are a lot happier when they take ownership of their learning.
After this long frustrating school year, wouldn’t it be great to see your child smile with price at what they can accomplish…their way? Isn’t it worth checking out?
