Success by Third Grade Beats Third Grade Retention Every Time – Parents Take Control

Third Grade Retention is a tactic that Florida passed back in 2002.  The lastest update of the Third Grade Retention law was passed in 2011.

A mom called me recently and asked whether third grade retention was the right option, or should be opt-out of the third grade test.

She also asked if the Good Cause Exemptions provided good options.

At 3D Learner, we are clear on three items:

1- Opting-out of the Third Grade Testing is an act of civil disobedience, but it increases the risk for third grade retention — because getting a Level 2 on the Third Grade Reading FSA is by far the easiest way to be promoted

2-  The Florida Good Cause Exemptions are all far harder to achieve than a Level 2 on the test

3-  Success by Third Grade, where your child significantly improves his or her reading comprehension is by far the best choice — because it will help your child both pass the test and to be prepared for 4th grade and beyond

Success by Third Grade for the Child Who Learns Differently

Most of the struggling third graders learn differently and have some combination of attention, anxiety, eye-teaming and related issues

Third Grade Retention

Beat Third Grade Retention by Focusing on Success by Third Grade

Five key problems that hamper success by third grade:

  •  Students often learn differently and have difficulty understanding the small words and recognizing words previously seen and not mastered
  • They have difficulty with inferencing and understanding the questions
  • They skip words and lines when reading
  • They often lose focus during long tests, and extended time often results in students changing right answers to wrong answers
  • Anxiety impacts the students before, during and after the test

Can Success by Third Grade Be Achieved Within Months and Can Third Grade Retention be Avoided

Yes, in most cases.  There are rare cases, where the student has a significant problem, but in over 90% of the students we see, Success by Third Grade can be achieve and Third Grade Retention can be avoided.  We make a few caveats:

1- Success by Third Grade for an at-risk student will take finding and investing in a program that capitalizes on how your child learns best and identifies and addressed their issues

2- Success by Third Grade with just a few months to go will require a concentrated effort — both in terms of instruction time and follow-up

3-  Success by Third Grade often requires a mom on a mission, a dad on a mission or both – there is often precious little time to waste.
