Goal Set for An Outrageously Successful School Year
Is your child a kinesthetic learner with executive function and/or a visual processing issue?
The Kinesthetic Learner with Executive Function and/or Visual Processing Issues
Often Has the Potential to Make Significant Gains within Months
What we know about smart struggling kids:
- Most are a kinesthetic learner, who learns best when they see and experience information
- They often have problems with executive function issues (i.e., working memory, processing speed, attention) and/or visual processing issues
- When the work is relevant and engaging, they are far more likely to succeed
- They are natural goal setters who want to do better-They are BIG PICTURE learners
When we discuss a student who might be a kinesthetic learner with executive function and/or a visual processing issue we consider the following questions:
- Where is the student struggling? Eight common challenges include:
- Reading comprehension that is well below what you would expect
- Difficulties with math word problems occurs in almost all our students
- Homework time and stress. Homework often takes 1.5 to 2 times longer than it does for a more typical student. Note, this can add 5 to 10 extra hours of work every week. It takes a huge toll on both the student and often the parent
- Frustration and anxiety are often present
- Past interventions have not yielded the desired results
- Prior interventions taught in a hands-on visual way that is consistent with how your child may learn best
- Have executive function issues been identified and addressed? These might include attention, working memory, processing speed and related issues
- Visual processing issues are often missed and when identified, they may not be effectively addressed
Below we will discuss two students:
One who was far behind
One who was doing OK, but had the potential to do much better
Note, our goal setting approach is far different than most, because
- The gains in reading comprehension and math can be far greater when you:
- Teach the way your child learns best
- Identify and address the relevant issues
- Help ignite a love for learning
- Help parents to be the coach and advocate their child needs
Note, we have over 25 years of successes with these kids. We know that an Informed, Empowered and Proactive parent can make the difference.

Goal Setting for the Kinesthetic Learner who is Far Below Grade Level
Lisa was a struggling 5th grader. Her reading comprehension was well below grade level, despite an investment of $34000 in a dyslexia treatment and years of tutoring.
The first goal we set was to understand how Lisa learned best, which issues were holding her back, where she was strong, and what her present level of reading comprehension was.
It turned out:
- Her reading comprehension was at the first-grade level
- She read at 115 words per minute — which is about half the rate we would expect
- She was a kinesthetic learner
- She did have a significant attention and processing speed issue
- She really had problems with math word problems
To make matters worse, homework was taking 2.5 hours a night, when it should have taken an hour. To make matters even worse, her mother was spending the whole time with her.
With her parents, we set the following goals within four months, to:
- Improve her reading comprehension to the 4th grade level, a 3 grade level improvement
- Increase her reading speed from 115 to 172 words per minute, a 50 percent increase
- Decrease her homework time from 2.5 hours 1.5 hours and to decrease her mom’s time to 30 minutes
Her mother asked if it was possible to get her daughter to grade level within 6 months. The answer was it could be possible, if they did the required follow up.
Note, we have had other clients with similar results.
Goal Setting for the Kinesthetic Learner who is At Grade Level, With The Potential Do Better
Marci’s Mom was not a happy trooper. She asked the principal for help when she saw that her 7th grade daughter was doing average work, although she was in Gifted Classes. The principal said, “Your daughter is doing average work, and someone needs to be average”.
Mom called a friend who recommended she call us.
She brought Marci to us for an assessment, and it showed that she was at the 5th grade level in comprehension, and her reading rate was at 135 words per minute. It also revealed that Marci was a kinesthetic learner who had a working memory, processing speed, attention and visual processing challenge. She was quite anxious and shy, and read no books on her own.
The goals we set were to:
- Improve her reading comprehension from the 48th to the 85th percentile — a 2 year improvement
- Increase her reading speed by 50 percent to 200 words per minute
- Read four books over the next 4 months
Marci surprised her mom and herself:
- She improved her reading comprehension from the 48th to the 95th percentile — a 2.5 year improvement in her reading comprehension
- She improved her reading speed by 75 percent to 250 words per minute
- She read 6 books
- She blossomed as a young lady
A psychologist once commented, “You get such good results, because you attract parents who really want to make the difference”. That is actually our goal.
