Reading Comprehension Problems and Behavior Issues

Reading comprehension problems will be hard to assess this year. With online schooling, addressing behavior challenges will be more challenging. Experts predicted a COVID Learning Slide. Now with online schooling in 2020-21, the issues are more likely to get worse for many students.

What is a parent to do? This is especially challenging for the dual income family or single parent family. In these cases, parents often have to work, parent and manage a student who may be well behind in reading comprehension. This same child is more likely to have behavior challenges.

In the early grades, there is a real focus on reading fluency — how well a student reads. With schools moving to online in March of 2020, there is a good chance that reading comprehension problems will not be fully recognized till the start of the school year.

What is worse is that a student with reading comprehension problems may resort to misbehaving as a way to creatively avoid reading.

What is a Frustrated Parent To Do?

First, we recommend asking the new teacher to assess your child’s reading and reading comprehension skills. It is important to do both — since too often reading is assessed and not comprehension.

At the same time, you want to assure your child that you are on top of the issue and will help them. In the earlier grades, we recommend doing shared reading, where at first you read 4 pages out of 5. Then move to 3 out of 5 and so on, until your child can assume full responsibility.

We recommend using high interest books that will engage your child.

As for behavior challenges, it is important to recognize when they occur. Frequently they will happen when your child is hungry or thirsty. In these cases, consider health snacks and having your child drink more water.

When the behavior appears to be a way to creatively doing school work that is hard, help your child to succeed.
