Get into a school routine. When I was growing up, we used to have a weekly family meeting. It was a great time for all of us to spend some time together and talk about our week, as well as voice any issue we had. We even had chore charts!
With a family’s busy schedule, and everyone going in different directions, this might be the perfect time to bring this tradition back into vogue. It’s been a busy summer and meal, bedtime and activities have thrown a wrench into any kid of schedule. It is nice not to be totally scheduled. As summer is winding down, it’s time start thinking about making some positive changes.
Laying out a weekly family routine is something everyone in your family can benefit from. Get a big wall calendar for all to see and use.
Put in family meal times – studies show that children of families that spend quality meal times together have better grades! Try to do at least 2 meals together a day.
Get Input from everyone about what time they need to wake up in the morning in order to get ready for school – including whatever activities/chores need to be completed. Is there time to exercise or practice an instrument?
Make sure time for a real breakfast is included.
Put into the calendar all kid’s activities after school, and playtime AND BEDTIME!
Getting a good night’s sleep is vital to ward off getting sick, and reduce attention and anxiety issue.
Once you have these parameters in place: when to WAKE UP and GO TO SLEEP, put everything else in between. If possible. keep the sleep routine for a few weekends until a regular sleep schedule is established. Some kids might need to start by using a timer.
Beginning a family routine is a great start.
