Improve reading comprehension – this should be a top priority for the many middle schoolers who are 2, 3, 4 and sometimes even 5 years below grade level in reading comprehension.
In Florida, middle school students who scored below grade level on the English Language Assessment or the Math Assessment were required to take remedial classes. The focus was to help students improve reading comprehension and math skills. The downside was the kids were losing electives, not making the desired gains and frustrating students and parents. The Florida Legislature Passed a New Law
The Florida Legislature and Governor passed a law that allows a parent to decline these courses. See page 11 on the Florida Department of Education discussion on House Bill 7069.
Improve Reading Comprehension for Florida Middle School Students
Florida has received accolades for their 4th Grade Reading NAEP scores — that are 4 points above the national average. The challenge is that by 8th grade Florida students are below the national average.
Great 4th Grade Results – Bad 8th Grade Results — Parents Must Act
Florida’s better than average 4th grade results are probably attributable to a focus on the early grades and other factors that are often not discussed including:
- Third Grade Retention policies mean the lowest 10 percent of the third grade class spends an extra year in third grade and does somewhat better in 4th grade
- The McKay Scholarship allows a number of parents to move their child to private school at public expense — if their child has an IEP or 504 Plan
- Many parents are choosing to home school their child
Taking Away Remediate Does Not Improve Reading Comprehension
The challenge is we now see high school students who are now 4, 5, 6 and even more years below grade level in their reading comprehension. We agree that school based remediation programs are both frustrating and deprive students their option of taking electives. but
the challenge is that this now shifts the need from schools to parents to improve their child’s reading comprehension.
